I was drawn to Spock because I did not fit in. I was born with a physical disability yet I am very intelligent. In the Dark Ages when I was growing up, the disabled were ostracized and bullied in the ‘normal’ schools. For years, groups of children would corner me in the hallways and tease me for walking on crutches and for being different from them. The school board was so sick of my mother getting in their face about how I was treated that they pretty much forced her to send me to the ‘special education’ center with the other disabled children—the ones no one wanted to teach or see.
Last spring I was challenged by a senior editor at Dreamspinner Press who I’d worked with for many, many years to write for the 2019 Advent Calendar. I don’t focus on romance. It’s always the side course in my writing, but for this it had to be the main event. I had 2 weeks to write 15K. The theme was ‘homemade for the holidays’, and imagine my surprise when I had a plot in 10 minutes!
I pounded out 14000 (ish) words and created Christmas Ghosts, which will be my first officially published work for DSP. Had I more time, I’d have gone for the upper limit and done an entire novella, because I really love the characters I created and the story hit me where I live.
One big lesson learned from my clay yesterday, 2 oz blocks are not at all big enough. Will need to get larger blocks of black, since I know I’ll be using it a lot. It comes in up to a pound, but I don’t want the clay to get old and be a bitch to work with so 8oz will probably be it.
The Nesco was dusty inside, so I need to wash and let it dry before I attempt the first baking. All my stuff will need to be either short or baked on its back/side. I learned from youtube that you can bake on a pile of cornstarch if you need to lay something flat that shouldn’t be, so that should be OK.
Several years ago, I got it into my head that I needed to make tortilla soup, and by needing, I mean NEEDING. I wanted Islands’ recipe, which I found online, and I mixed in a few others to round it out. (That’s pretty much how I cook. I look for 3 or 4 recipes for the same thing and take bits and pieces.)
The recipe I found called for chipotle peppers. It said a can of them. I swear to god it did. Being in San Diego, means I can buy real Mexican ingredients. No El Paso Salsa in my house. I go for the real deal. The real deal is missing one thing that you get on Americanized Mexican food, there is no heat scale on the jar/can.
In June of 2007 I went to Eugene to see my mom and dad. I’m pretty sure my niece was still at U of O then, but I’m not sure. My Papa taught me how to prune roses when I was little. He showed me how the rose would create a bud after the 5 leaf cluster and not the 3. Sadly that’s about all I remember now, but then again it’s been decades.
